A new documentary by Lee Strobel titled, “The Case for Miracles,” aims to provide evidence that miracles similar to those that are recorded in the Bible do indeed take place today. The documentary will be in theaters Dec. 15–18.

Strobel recounts how investigating the historical evidence for Jesus’ resurrection transformed him from an atheist to a Christian. Today, he believes miracles still occur and outlines four criteria he uses to verify credible cases: medical documentation, multiple eyewitnesses, lack of natural explanation, and whether the event happens in the context of prayer.

“If I see those four things together, depending on the circumstance, I can be persuaded that, yes, God has intervened supernaturally today in his creation,” Strobel told ChurchLeaders.

Strobel shares scientifically documented studies from Mozambique and Brazil—published in a secular, peer-reviewed medical journal—showing dramatic improvements in hearing and vision immediately after Christian prayer. Strobel does admit that fraud, coincidence, placebo, and spontaneous remission exist but cannot account for many well-evidenced cases.

The best-selling author also shares how global “clusters” of miracles are happening where the gospel is spreading, such as in China and Mozambique. He discusses whether miracles are increasing or scientific documentation is just rising.

“For the first time, we’ve got scientists documenting apparent miracles—publishing them in peer-reviewed journals,” said Strobel. “So it looks like we have a proliferation of well-established miracles, but it may not be because more are happening. It could be because we’re documenting more of them today.”

Strobel hopes the film strengthens audiences’ faith during the Christmas season and sparks conversations among seekers. He believes God is moving powerfully today, citing recent church events where hundreds have received Christ. Strobel also encourages pastors and believers to “seize the season” and invite others to explore the evidence for miracles and the message of Jesus.

“God is doing something in our culture,” Strobel said.”Two weekends ago at a church, 105 people came to faith. The next weekend, 160 came to faith. God is doing something—let’s seize the season.”
