Christian singer and songwriter Lauren Daigle recently shared something she had only previously shared with one other person. While going through old voice memos, Daigle realized that, after she released “Look Up Child,” she lost a measure of freedom in her artistic voice.

I had a moment of just saying, ‘God, what has happened? What have I done?’” said Daigle. “And it was this very uprooting and sort of painful exchange where I was like, ‘I’m gonna take this—I’m sad that something has changed, but I need to sit here for a moment.’”

Daigle was driving around New Orleans, and as she did so, she asked God, “What is it that has changed?”

“And a lot of it came back to that very thing, the labeling,” she said.

Lauren Daigle is a Grammy Award-winning contemporary Christian singer and songwriter known for her soulful voice and crossover appeal. She rose to prominence with her 2015 debut album “How Can It Be” and achieved mainstream success with her 2018 album “Look Up Child.”

Daigle joined speaker and Bible teacher Jeff Cavins for Day 39 of the Lent prayer challenge offered by Catholic prayer and meditation app Hallow. On Saturdays during the challenge, different people sit down with Cavins to talk about their faith journeys. Previous interviewees have been Mother Olga, music artist Gwen Stefani, actor Michael Iskander, and actor Patricia Heaton.

Cavins said he wanted to talk to Daigle about “people trying to put a label on you.”

“I know when I’m talking to all kinds of singers and actors and other people that people love to pigeonhole you,” he said. “They love to put a label on you. What does that do to you, and how do you respond to that?”

“Okay. I haven’t shared this with anyone but one person,” Daigle said.

“It was like three nights ago,” she told Cavins. “I think it was three nights ago. I was riding around in New Orleans, and we have a songwriting retreat coming up, and so I was like, ‘I need to start preparing.’”
