After “Light of the World” collected just over $2 million during its opening weekend, director John J. Schafer expressed his disappointment in the film’s low box office numbers.

The film, which is directed by both Schafer (“Superbook”) and former Walt Disney animator Tom Bancroft (“Aladdin,” “Mulan,” “Pocahontas,” “The Lion King”), is the first theatrical release from the Salvation Poem Project.

“Light of the World” received an A from CinemaScore and tells the story of Jesus through the eyes of the Apostle John using animation the entire family can enjoy.

Schafer shared with ChurchLeaders that he hopes those who watch the film will understand that Jesus “truly is their friend…[and that] he understands all the pain we’re going through.”

“For those who don’t know Jesus,” Schafer continued, “I just want people to realize that Jesus is a friend.” Schafer encouraged Christians to use “Light of the World” as an evangelistic tool and invite an unbelieving friend to the theater, using the movie to spark conversation about Jesus afterwards.

On Tuesday, Sept. 9, Schafer used social media to express how “tough” it was for him because box office numbers for the film’s opening weekend weren’t what he had hoped for.

“First, I want to thank everyone who has supported our movie through social media throughout the year and who saw it this past weekend,” Schafer said. “I’m so grateful to all our fans from around the world. Thank you.”

He continued, “The opening weekend was tough for me.”

“I had hoped for a higher box office, not based on data,” said Schafer, “but on the phenomenal feedback from the domestic and international pre-screenings and the overwhelming positive audience and critic reviews.” He expressed how much he believes in the film and how “you don’t have to be a person of faith to enjoy” it.
