Christmas craft ideas are a highlight of the holiday season. Crafts help children learn about Jesus, God’s greatest gift. They’re also hands-on and memorable, and families will cherish the crafts for years.

Sometimes we get stuck in a rut with crafts, though. So for fresh Christmas craft ideas that also share the gospel, keep reading!

First a reminder: Children learn best when they can tinker and explore. While crafting, invite questions and conversations. Let kids add their own flair. Most importantly, use each project to talk about Jesus, our Immanuel (God with us).

22 Christmas Craft Ideas for Sunday School

These 22 outside-the-box Christmas craft ideas teach kids the true meaning of Christmas.

1. Good News Scrolls

Give kids parchment-style paper and a couple of mini dowels. Have them write (or glue on) the angel’s message: “I bring you good news of great joy…” (Luke 2:10). Roll up the paper like an ancient scroll.
Teaching tie-in: Angels didn’t whisper God’s good news. They announced it boldly!

2. Star Path Light-Up Jars

Fill small jars with battery tea lights, salt “snow,” and star confetti.
Teaching tie-in: Just as the star guided the wise men, Jesus still lights our path today.

3. Story Stones: If I Went to Bethlehem…

Kids paint small stones with symbols from the Nativity (manger, sheep, star, etc.). Then they can use the stones to tell the Christmas story in their own words.
Teaching tie-in: Jesus came for us and invites us into his story.

4. Names of Jesus Garland

Each paper chain link features a different name of Jesus (Light of the World, Savior, Prince of Peace, and so on).
Teaching tie-in: The birth of Jesus fulfills all of God’s promises.

5. Manger-in-a-Matchbox

Kids decorate matchboxes and create a mini manger scene inside. Use clay, fabric scraps, or paper.
Teaching tie-in: Jesus humbled himself while on earth.

6. Stained-Glass Nativity Art

Gather aluminum foil, markers, and cardboard frames. Then have kids create shining stained-glass pieces about Christmas.
Teaching tie-in: Jesus brings light into all parts of our lives.

7. Advent Promises Countdown Tree

Create a cardboard or felt tree with 25 ornaments. Each represents a fulfilled prophecy about Jesus’ birth.
Teaching tie-in: God lovingly planned Christmas from the beginning.

8. Mary’s Journey Map

Kids assemble a simple map from Nazareth to Bethlehem, decorating with textures (sandpaper roads, cotton mountains).
Teaching tie-in: Mary and Joseph trusted God all the way, even when the journey was hard.

9. Coffee-Filter Angels

Turn coffee filters into floating angels with a ribbon strip that reads Luke 2:14.
Teaching tie-in: The angels weren’t just singing. They were worshiping Jesus, our newborn King.

10. “Jesus Is the Greatest Gift” Pop-Up Cards

Kids make 3D pop-up cards with a manger inside and a tag that says “For You.”
Teaching tie-in: Salvation is a gift—completely free and for everyone.

11. Nativity Silhouettes

Create soft watercolor backgrounds. Then glue on black silhouette cutouts of Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus.
Teaching tie-in: Jesus came quietly, but his light changes everything.
