How well do you embrace criticism? Handling critics positively is a challenging task. We all like a pat on the back! When someone says something negative, most of us feel uneasy. Our thoughts immediately go to all the reasons why something is the way it is.

Out of a need for self-preservation, we avoid criticism like the plague. Few people willingly send out evaluations for personal reflection or ask people, “What do I do that you hate?”

But remember: Criticism is our friend. As biased individuals, we’re in love with ourselves and the way we do things. So constructive criticism is the only honest way we’ll get better.

How To Embrace Criticism at Church

One of the best ways to harness the amazing power of criticism is to systematize it. For example:

  • Every Monday, send a survey to first-time visitors asking for feedback.
  • After special events or classes, send an evaluation to families.
  • Have leaders evaluate services/messages each week. Then your staff and planning team can know how to make improvements.

Most of us continue doing the same things year after year. Yet we never pause to ask, “So, how are we doing?” One way to embrace criticism is to remember that it’s neutral, regardless of who brings it.

Years ago, one mother pulled me aside and offered harsh words about an event I was planning. This opinionated parent was rarely kind and loving in her communication. Because I didn’t like what she was telling me, I quickly dismissed it.
