On Tuesday, Oct. 7, Ben Fuller talked with ChurchLeaders on the red carpet of the 56th Annual Dove Awards about the importance of staying in communication with Jesus. Fuller expressed that going even a day without talking to Jesus can make it difficult to fight temptations.
Fuller was nominated for Bluegrass/Country/Roots Recorded Song of the Year for his collaboration with Carrie Underwood on his song “If It Was Up To Me.” Underwood later made a surprise appearance at the awards show during Fuller’s live performance.
Fuller is currently on tour with Zach Williams, We the Kingdom, and Leanna Crawford. He shared that he is witnessing God “turning hearts back to him…I’m really grateful to see what God is doing.”
The “Walk Through Fire” singer said that he feels “like there’s this incredible growth and explosion happening in the Christian music industry right now.”
“We just need to remain humble,” he said, “to almost harness it in a way that says, ‘Okay, God, we see you moving. We love this so much. How do we not get conceited with it or take it into our own hands but just let the Holy Spirit work.’”

Fuller shared two words for the church that he said had been given to him: relationship and pace.
“It’s so important to keep our relationship solid and on fire with the Holy Spirit and with the Lord Jesus,” Fuller explained. “And then, pace—because I get so excited. I just want to tell everybody about Jesus. But honestly, the devil can run me ragged doing that.”
“So as long as I keep my relationship healthy with Jesus and stay in the Word, then my pace will be good—because it’ll be his pace, not mine,” he said. “Sometimes we get so excited thinking, ‘I need to save everybody!’ Especially now, when Christian music is blowing up.”
“But it’s like, wait a minute—that’s the Holy Spirit’s job, not mine. My job is to introduce people to Jesus while keeping my relationship with him on fire,” Fuller added. “If I do that, I won’t lose my way. It’s easy to lose your way—and when your pace gets out of whack, you end up on the broad road.”
Fuller shared that taking his eyes off Jesus could have cost him his sobriety. “Last week, I was tempted to drink again,” he said. “I almost did—and I just celebrated six years [of sobriety]. It would’ve been so easy to fall off that road, to take my eyes off Jesus. Like Peter, I would’ve sunk in the water.”
