As Game 7 of the World Series went into extra innings, fans and players were unsure of the outcome of the game and of the season. Former outfielder Mookie Betts embraced his new role as shortstop and helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series—the second year in a row.
“He answers everyone’s prayers as long as you have a relationship with him,” Betts said of his relationship with God.
LA Dodgers Shortstop Mookie Betts Plays ‘In His Image’
LA Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts has now won four World Series titles—one with the Boston Red Sox and three with the Dodgers. As defending champions, the Dodgers were favored to win the World Series again.
But as Game 7 went into extra innings, the outcome was questionable. The Dodgers came up short throughout the first eight innings and ended up tying it in the ninth, thanks to Miguel Rojas’ home run. After Betts completed an unassisted double play, the 2025 title was theirs.
“I was so nervous right there,” Betts said to Fox Sports. “I’ve never been in that situation. I was so nervous and as he was pitching the ball, I was talking to myself, saying, ‘Be nasty. Mook, just make a play. Be nasty. Be nasty.’”
“And the ball found me and I just kind of played,” he continued. “All the work in the back fields, it all came to fruition.”
Betts spoke highly of the Dodgers community. “The love that we have for each other in this clubhouse, in this organization, is something I’ve never been a part of,” Betts said. “I love being a Dodger, I love each and every person in here, and it was on display today.”
He has a love for more than just baseball and the Dodgers, however. Betts has been outspoken about his faith. He wears a wristband that says, “God is greater than the highs and lows.” Prior to the game-winning play, Betts was experiencing several lows. He was hitting 3-23 in the first five games against the Toronto Blue Jays. While he didn’t get a hit in Game 7, he did end up scoring a run after he walked in the sixth inning.
In an interview last week, Betts was asked, “How evident is God’s grace in your life?”
“Oh, it’s huge,” Betts told CBN Sports. “Just for me moving to short and then praying—a lot of prayers on wanting to be a successful shortstop, especially in his image.”
Betts spoke more about his relationship with God, saying, “But he really just answered all the prayers. I mean, he answers everyone’s prayers as long as you have a relationship with him. You talk to him, you come to him with everything, and I did and he’s definitely led me this far.”
An outfielder-turned-shortstop, Mookie Betts’ unassisted double play clinched Game 7 of the World Series for the Dodgers. Earlier in the week, he talked about God’s grace.
