Filmmaker and former pastor Brad Gray shared the heart behind “The Lord’s Prayer,” a new feature-length documentary now streaming on Angel Studios.
The documentary is shot on location throughout the Holy Land and aims to bring Jesus’ most famous prayer to life through immersive cinematography, historical context, and insights from renowned scholars N.T. Wright, Dr. Michael Guillen, and others.
“This film is the first of its kind. Never has the Lord’s Prayer been explained in its original context through such a beautiful, premium documentary format. I believe in and support this project. The cinematography is spectacular. The content is exceptional,” executive producer Mark Burnett said in a press release.
Gray told ChurchLeaders that the project began not as a film but as a personal spiritual awakening while studying the Sermon on the Mount. Despite years in ministry, he realized the Lord’s Prayer was familiar but neglected. That realization sparked a seven-year journey that reshaped his prayer life and ultimately became a documentary designed for both believers and those exploring faith.

“I was literally sitting down one day reading the Sermon on the Mount and when it got to the Lord’s Prayer, you know, Matthew records Jesus prefacing the Lord’s Prayer by saying, ‘And when you pray, this then is how you should pray,’” Gray said. “And I just had a moment where I was like, ‘Oh man, I think Jesus meant it.’”
But, he continued, “I was like embarrassed, you know? I mean, I’d been a pastor for more than a decade. I’ve been leading these biblical study hiking trips since 2010. I’ve been in church world. And I was like, man, the Lord’s Prayer is not something that is central to my life.”
“I know it. I learned it as a kid. I’ll say it occasionally on special occasions,” Gray shared, “but it was a moment where I was like, just for the sake of my own soul, I need to go figure out what is in this prayer and why did Jesus apparently feel like we should be praying this thing daily?”
After doing a deep dive in the Lord’s Prayer, Gray said it “started to transform my prayer life.” He explained, “It transformed how I thought about things. I was way more clear and laser focused on a daily basis on the things that mattered.”
Gray’s hope is that “The Lord’s Prayer” would fundamentally reshape how people pray and live on a daily basis. “Ultimately, the goal has been from day one that once someone has watched this film…they’ll never go another day of their life not saying this prayer,” Gray said. He hopes they will come to realize, “It’s like oxygen for the lungs. This is the blueprint. This is the recalibration daily to what I should be putting my time and my effort and my energy to.”
Gray also expressed a global vision for the project, saying he hopes it will inspire millions of people to live out the Lord’s Prayer with renewed faith, context, and intentionality.
