State Might Pursue the Death Penalty, DA Says
Investigators are still processing the crime scenes and looking into the background of suspect Daricka Moore. “I don’t know what kind of motive you could have to kill a 7-year-old,” said Sheriff Eddie Scott. Moore “has not been on our radar,” Scott added. “We don’t know what was going through his mind.”
Authorities arrested Moore at a roadblock more than four hours after the shooting. They said they believe he acted alone. Moore, who’s being held without bail, has an initial court appearance today (Jan. 12).
At Saturday’s press conference, Clay County District Attorney Scott Colom said his office will likely pursue the death penalty. “These charges are going to be upgraded to capital murder. [There’s] going to probably be more than one count,” he said. “Six people, one night, several different scenes,” Colom added. “It’s about as bad as it gets.”

The legal process will involve mental evaluations plus discussions with survivors, Colum explained, but “some cases…they’ve got to get the worst punishment.”
Sheriff Scott said he’s focused on “solving this case for our victims and being there for these families and doing what we can to support them.” He noted that “some of our local churches are getting together, some prayer groups are going to be lifting [the survivors] up.”
