Saying children’s needs are more important than adult desires, a new coalition has launched to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage.
Greater Than, which kicked off today (Jan. 28), is spearheaded by Them Before Us, a nonprofit group founded by advocate Katy Faust. For years, Faust has led “a global defense of children’s rights and natural marriage,” providing allies with “the language to challenge divorce, IVF, and surrogacy.”
Faust, a pastor’s wife and mother of four, said same-sex marriage victimizes children by making parenthood adult-centered. She speaks from experience: After Faust’s parents divorced when she was 10, her mother began a relationship with a female partner.
In an email to ChurchLeaders, Faust said Greater Than has been in the works since last summer. The movement will focus on three areas: influencing policy and court cases, changing public opinion, and serving the church.
Marriage is “the most child-friendly institution the world has ever known,” Faust said, but when it’s “viewed as a vehicle of adult fulfillment, children are victimized.” That’s why “it’s time to make children greater than again.”

Defending Children as ‘Greater Than’
The Greater Than movement is backed by numerous conservative Christian leaders and by national and state pro-family groups. A three-minute video for its launch featured high-profile figures such as seminary president Dr. Albert Mohler, pro-life advocate Lila Rose, author Allie Beth Stuckey, “BreakPoint” co-host John Stonestreet, and Focus on the Family President Jim Daly.

In the video, Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said, “It’s a mother and a father that bring forth children into the world, and that’s by design.” On Wednesday, Perkins reposted the Greater Than video, writing, “Glad to take part in this campaign. Children need a mother and a father; it’s God’s design for the family.”
Participants are “ordinary people with an extraordinary conviction: children must come first in every conversation about marriage, family, and fertility,” wrote Greater Than. The coalition said it plans to work with experts in areas such as child welfare, law, research, and public policy.
Adults must make sacrifices for children, not the other way around, according to Greater Than. “Children deserve more than adult desire dressed up as equality,” the coalition stated. “They deserve their mother and father, united and protected in law, and honored in culture.”

Greater Than also emphasized that marriage isn’t about “adult validation [but] about defending the rights that children cannot defend themselves.”
