High Point Hero: ‘Rejoice in Weakness’
After Thursday’s March Madness upset against Wisconsin, High Point coach Flynn Clayman praised the “selfless” play of Chase Johnston and the entire team. When Johnston was asked who he models his game after, he told reporters, “I trust my work, trust the Lord, and just allow everything to take care of itself after that.”
Before transferring to High Point, Johnston had hip surgery and “felt the Lord was maybe calling me into ministry,” he told The Athletic. But while praying, the guard sensed Jesus telling him, “I want you to come back and play basketball, but I want you to do it for my glory.”
At High Point, Johnston befriended teammate Trae Benham, who had already launched team Bible studies. Switching schools was challenging, Johnston admitted, but “the Lord has provided so much.” This season, after being pegged as a three-point sharpshooter, Johnston spent lots of time on the bench, waiting for his big moment.
The spotlight couldn’t have been brighter on day No. 1 of the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
When asked what sermon he’d give based on Thursday’s game-winning two-pointer—his first of the season—Johnston said, “I think we’ve gotta talk about, ‘Rejoice in weakness.’ We’ve gotta talk about Second Corinthians 12:1-10.”
The athlete can boast in difficulties, knowing that his strength comes from Jesus, the Good Shepherd who leaves the 99 to seek the one lost sheep.
