“I think the Credentials Committee needs to operate very efficiently, clearly, and without hesitation in matters that relate to this issue of Baptist conviction,” Mohler said. “And by that, I mean all issues, but this is the contentious issue.”

“We need them to show how they’re going to deal with this efficiently so that these matters don’t always end up on the floor of the SBC,” he added. “Now, by the way, if they do end up on the floor—and let’s just say congregations would have the right to make their appeal—if they do so, then we’re going to have to deal with that.”

“I think even recent evidence indicates the messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention are just really competent to deal with that pretty efficiently,” said Mohler. “I also think that once the message is sent, the message will be received.”

“In confessional issues, people ask me, ‘Where’s the end of this?’ And the answer is, ‘There isn’t an end of this until Jesus comes,’” Mohler said. “We don’t even know what will be some of the touchpoints of compromise and doctrinal subversion and confusion with needed clarification and affirmation.”

“We can’t anticipate all of these things, but we can be determined that we’re going to meet them with conviction and with biblical fidelity,” he continued, “and, I think, with a consensus that actually helps to build and enrich and extend the Southern Baptist Convention, its reach, its mission, its purpose.”

As he concluded, Mohler expressed his belief that “the churches of the Southern Baptist Convention are really clear on this matter.”

“Where there’s confusion, it’s our responsibility in this generation to clarify it. The confusion has gone on to the point in which I think it really is very dangerous to the future of the Southern Baptist Convention,” said Mohler. “I believe that if this issue is handed to messengers in virtually any form, the messengers will know what to do with it.”

“Over time, I have learned this extremely well: Southern Baptists, faced with a clear issue of conviction, will do the right thing,” the seminary president concluded. “They’ve done it in the past. I count on them doing it again. Once again, brothers and sisters, we will meet as the Southern Baptist Convention in Orlando. Let’s be really clear that we get the right thing done, and then go home and lead faithful churches.”
