The Subtle Schism Forming in the Southern Baptist Church

Dr. Lorick point back to the SBC conservative resurgence of the 70s and 80s. What brought the denomination together after a bruising fight was a unified love for God’s word and in its inerrancy. “We need something that will unite us on mission again,” Lorick says.

And he’s hoping for a change of focus.

“There’s chaos right now, we aren’t blind to that. But good things are happening. We need to focus on the good things we’re doing, that God is doing.”

And he’s praying for a fresh movement when Southern Baptists meet in Dallas next month.

“We Need to go to Dallas with a humble posture. The greatest need in the Southern Baptist Convention today is not a new president, it is not new seminary presidents, the greatest need is for a group of people…to be hungry and humbled for a move of God, and that, that becomes the focal point.”

Young and old, Calvinist and non-Calvinist and those deciding what the SBC should look like in the future are all praying for that too.
