States Are Moving to Ban Conversion Therapy

The practice of conversion therapy is under scrutiny in a number of states in the U.S. Currently, there are 18 states which have laws in place to prevent psychologists from performing conversion therapy on minors. Most laws include exemptions for religious organizations. However, the latest iteration of a legal battle in California sought to control the church’s involvement in practices it considered on par with conversion therapy. More states have proposed bills in place to regulate such therapy.

Advocates for conversion therapy bans say the practice inflicts great psychological harm on people and can cause lasting damage. Other people, such as Ken Williams of Bethel Church’s Change Movement, say trying to live a homosexual lifestyle can lead to mental turmoil and even suicidal thoughts. “I stopped having suicidal feelings after I found help and hope through church and through a counselor,” Williams shared in a video posted to Facebook. While the Changed Movement doesn’t advocate conversion therapy per se, it does appear they are trying to do what Game hopes HFW will do: Provide a community and support for those who can’t reconcile their faith and their same sex attraction.
