While there are those who have responded critically to Joshua Bassett’s proclamations of faith, many of his followers have been supportive, and some are even encouraging other believers not to put too much pressure on him.

For example, multiple people reacted to a recent post of Bassett playing a song (which he clarified was not about God) by saying they hoped to see an album of worship songs from him soon. Others pushed back. “Dear Christians,” said one of Bassett’s Instagram followers, “please please please. Do not put pressure on this new convert to start doing ‘christian things’. Why don’t we start with a prayer that God begins to do the work in His life? After all, when you gave your life to Jesus, you didn’t instantaneously and magically transform your whole life. God started a work in you that He continues to do. So please, stop with the high expectations and pray for this young man.”

A number of people responded with enthusiasm to Bassett’s acceptance speech at the Kids’ Choice Awards. “As a person who is agnostic, I don’t find this speech as any kind of indoctrination at all,” said one Instagram user. “He’s converted lately and is passionate about it and I find it really fascinating for someone who just can’t feel the same way.”

“Shut up this is the best speech from receiving an award i’ve ever seen,” said another. “i’m SO proud of you Joshy, I know it’s hard for you to be this public about your relationship with God, but don’t be afraid, continue to do it and you can do suffer [sic] while you’re on Earth, but your reward will be in heaven! be strong and courageous, He’s with you. love you Joshua! congrats on the award.”
