She called freedom of conscience and speech “perhaps the greatest benefit of Western civilization,” noting that it doesn’t “come naturally” to humans but “is the product of centuries of debate within Jewish and Christian communities.”

In contrast to Islam, added Hirsi Ali, “Christianity outgrew its dogmatic stage. It became increasingly clear that Christ’s teaching implied not only a circumscribed role for religion as something separate from politics. It also implied compassion for the sinner and humility for the believer.”

Hirsi Ali launched the AHA Foundation with the mission of “preserving, protecting, and promoting Western freedoms and ideals.” According to its website, the nonprofit organization advocates for “universal human rights” and opposes “tyranny in all its forms.”
