Trump Celebrates Holy Week by Comparing Himself to Jesus, Promoting Bible Bound With America’s Founding Documents

In a social media post on Monday, former President Donald Trump compared his ongoing legal battles to the sacrifice of Christ. On Tuesday, he posted a video in which he promoted a Bible bound with America’s founding documents.

Notably, these religiously themed posts came on Holy Week, one of the most important celebrations in the Christian calendar. During the week leading up to Easter, Christians around the world commemorate the final week of Jesus’ earthly ministry, which culminated in his death and resurrection.

While Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election, he has been beleaguered by legal proceedings and judgments across several cases throughout the election season.

In May 2023, a jury awarded E. Jean Carroll $5 million after it concluded that Trump had sexually assaulted and defamed her. In January, a second defamation trial resulted in a $83.3 million judgment against Trump.

In New York, a court ruled that Trump and his associates had fraudulently undervalued real estate properties to avoid taxes while also overvaluing them to secure business loans. Trump has been fined $464 million and is appealing the case. After Trump was unable to secure a bond for the fine during the appeals process, an appellate court ruled that the bond amount would be reduced to $175 million.

Trump faces criminal charges in several other cases. Those cases include the scandal of Trump allegedly paying hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified information, and Trump’s alleged election subversion.

Conversely, Trump’s Truth Social has gone public, and shares of the social media company jumped 50% in the first day of trading on Nasdaq, providing a major financial windfall for the embattled former president.

As Truth Social stock prices were soaring on Monday (March 25), Trump posted on that very platform a message he said he received from a Christian ally.

“It’s ironic that Christ walked through His greatest persecution the very week they are trying to steal your property from you,” Trump quoted from the message. “But have you seen this verse…?”

Trump then quoted from Psalm 109:3-8, which says:

They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,
And fought against me without a cause.
In return for my love they are my accusers,
But I give myself to prayer.
Thus they have rewarded me evil for good,
And hatred for my love.
Set a wicked man over him,
And let an accuser stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, let him be found guilty,
And let his prayer become sin.
Let his days be few,
And let another take his office.
