“I like the idea that when I’m in prayer, in communion, just alone, that there is a figure available—wounded and coronated—available to me,” Brand said. “In my failings and my failures and my fallibility, there is strength.”
Brand has also learned and embraced some of the boundaries of Christianity. He said, “To be broken—not just broken by life in the sense that ‘life is weary and exhausting’—but to be broken in the same way that you have to train an animal [he pointed to his dog] to behave itself.”
“It’s a beautiful journey to go on,” said Brand.
“I know I’m just at the beginning,” he added. “I know I’m just learning. I know there’s so much more to learn.” Brand shared his excitement to learn from and journey together with his viewers. He asked, “Can you remember your first month as a Christian?”
With nearly 2 million views, Brand’s video has been seen around the world—with mixed reviews. Many are encouraging this new believer, while others are skeptical.
“Bro explained the gospel better than a lot of self-proclaimed Protestants that have been going to church for years,” said a follower named Georgia.
“Beautiful reflection,” shared someone named John. “Knowing Jesus Christ & having an intimate relationship with Him is life-changing.”
A user called By God’s Grace commented, “This is not Biblical Christianity and not the Gospel at all. Half new age half Romanism, works-based path to illumination he is talking about. As I warned he is a tare!”
From ‘Junkie’ to ‘Surrendered’—Russell Brand Went Public With His Curiosity of Christianity and Recent Conversion
A successful actor, comedian, and talk show host, Brand has admitted to trying many substances that didn’t end up satisfying him. But, as part of his spirituality podcast, the actor began to explore Christianity.
“When I grew up, Christianity seemed like it was either really irrelevant and old-fashioned and sort of dusty and sort of incense and sort of Anno Domini,” Brand explained.
Brand asked his followers for church suggestions as he sought more instruction and a faith community. “Is it important what church you go to, ’cause I’m just learning,” admitted Brand, as he queried his followers. He mentioned visiting a congregation with the Church of England and a Catholic church while also considering an Eastern Orthodox church.
Many have offered advice and encouragement to Brand along his journey. Pastor Greg Laurie reached out to him, providing guidance and prayer. Survivalist Bear Grylls and Brand’s friend, Joe, stood alongside him as he was baptized. “It was pretty incredible,” said Brand.
