Survivors and experts have also argued that the movie is misleading in how it portrays Lily leaving her abusive relationship. Essentially, she has one conversation, and then she is able to leave peacefully. 

Pamela Jacobs, the chief executive officer of the nonprofit organization the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, praised the film’s overall portrayal of abuse to the New York Times but said Lily “was able to get away much easier than people typically are.” Several domestic violence survivors told TODAY that survivors commonly fear for their safety when trying to leave their abusers.

Survivor Athena Raymond told TODAY that the film’s ending also did not portray the difficult journey to healing survivors have to walk once they leave an abusive relationship.
