Due to bird flu and other factors, egg prices have skyrocketed in the past few months. In Chicago, a dozen eggs cost an average of $6. Food-industry expert Phil Lempert said even without pending tariffs, “prices in the supermarket [are] going to get worse” for Americans in the foreseeable future.
A Good Egg: Pastor Charlie Dates Helps Chicagoans
Van Johnson, a longtime member of Salem Baptist Church, signed up to help with this weekend’s giveaway event. “The cost of eggs right now is tremendously high for a lot of families,” he said. “That’s a staple meal for breakfast and an important ingredient for various other things.”
Expensive groceries are “really causing an economic hardship on the community,” Johnson added, “and any way that we can lighten that burden as a church is really a blessing.”

Pastor Dates, who’s known for his community activism, said people of faith pull together during tough times. “The Black church has always stood in the gap for Black families, ensuring they have what they need to thrive,” he said. “We did it before, and we’re doing it now.”
