“I ain’t never been to a freak off. I’ve never been to any party in Hollywood, ever, where there was anything sexual happening, ever,” he added. “Not one time in my career, even nearly 10 years ago, when I was down bad.”

Some people ask Lecrae why, as a Christian, he would even go to such parties. “What you don’t understand is that it’s similar to being invited to a barbecue,” he said. “When you’re invited to the Roc Nation brunch, daytime, nighttime, it’s like a celebrity barbecue, just a bunch of people going out there in the backyard, having some drinks, talking, engaging, politicking, networking, that’s all it was.”

“That’s literally what it was,” he reiterated. “It was nothing chaotic and crazy. I mean, there were so many people there…and listen, if something did happen, I don’t know, because I left. I was out of there, you know, probably by midnight or after.”

“But the point I’m trying to make is it was never presented as something as dark and nasty, and ‘You shouldn’t be here,’” he explained, noting that Jesus was criticized for spending time with tax collectors and prostitutes.

“Now, I will admit to this,” Lecrae continued. “During that season of my life, I drank too much. I drank too much, I took, you know, prescription pills, smoked weed, I did all those things. This is nearly 10 years ago. I did those things, and I’ve told you about it time and time again.”

“I wrote about it in my book. You remember my book?” he asked. “I’ve talked about it in songs. Listen to the ‘Restoration’ album.”

“The reason why I talked about it on the album is because it’s something that I have repented of,” said Lecrae, questioning why people he has not heard from before are coming out of the woodwork, criticizing him now for actions he’s already turned away from.

“You know, no one ever asked me to repent from being a self-righteous jerk,” Lecrae said. “That’s what I was for a large part of my early Christian journey.”

“They all assumed I was awesome because what they saw in front of them was somebody proclaiming these truths and not caring that I was stepping on people in the process, just slandering folks, just tearing them down,” he said.

Lecrae went on to elaborate on mistakes he made as a result of his pride, including not being loving when confronting other Christians, being overly confident in letting DJ Vlad interview him, and being a “self-righteous jerk” toward a woman he was dating at one point.
