Although Carr forfeited his fully guaranteed 2025 salary of $30 million, he was allowed to keep the $10 million roster bonus he received in March. He’ll also keep his signing bonus from 2023, when he joined the Saints. The move offers New Orleans some salary-cap relief as they look for a new starting quarterback.
Derek Carr Lived Out His ‘Childhood Dream’
Derek Carr, who grew up in a Christian home, credits wife Heather with helping him solidify his faith while in college. The athlete often shares the gospel with strangers, including at a Chipotle restaurant in San Francisco. One of his messages also helped prevent three suicides.
Carr—who orders his priorities as faith, family, and then football—is also active in community service. “What a great individual,” said Dennis Allen, Carr’s former coach with the Raiders. “He did a lot of good things and was always somebody that was pleasant to be around.”
In his retirement announcement, Carr said:
For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.
On his Instagram post about retiring, the QB added more words of gratitude, thanking organizations “for giving me the opportunity to live out a childhood dream.”
Carr, a California native who played college football at Fresno State, hasn’t indicated if his family will remain in New Orleans.
