Christian comedian John Crist took a break from his “Jokes for Humans” tour to appear on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Monday (June 16). In his seven-minute debut on the late-night show, Crist told jokes about social media and correcting his girlfriend’s figures of speech.
Crist was a hit with the crowd—and with Fallon, who exclaimed afterward, “Oh, that’s how you do it!”
Crist, 41, is a pastor’s kid who grew up in a large homeschooling family in Atlanta. After his comedy career took off, he admitted to making “a lot of poor choices.” In 2019, Crist faced allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment from five women, causing Netflix to cancel his show.
Following a lengthy absence from social media and a stint in rehab, Crist posted a video in July 2020 thanking people for their support. The comedian said while he had been making a living pointing out hypocrisy, he was the biggest hypocrite. “I was portraying a person on the internet that I was not behaving like privately,” he admitted.
Earlier this year, Crist told Sadie Robertson Huff that he felt suicidal back then and saw no hope for a future. But the comedian became sober, embraced the grace that some people extended to him, and eventually realized that life is “so much better” with Jesus.

John Crist Jokes About Social Media Algorithms
On Monday’s episode of “The Tonight Show,” John Crist began by saying, “I don’t want to brag up front…We’re not engaged yet, but I did just get invited to join my girlfriend’s family group chat.”
The performer segued into the many obstacles that social media is “throwing your way” if you’re in a relationship in 2025. “We’re watching out for things all the time,” Crist said. “My girlfriend was on Instagram the other day. She brings me a photo. She goes, ‘John, do you think this girl’s hot?’… I go, ‘No.’ She goes, ‘Well, people think we look similar, and now I’m depressed.’ You can’t win.”
Crist noted that “back in the day,” you were “good to go” as long as you didn’t “follow any exes, don’t follow any models” on social media. “Now with the algorithms, they’re just lobbing stuff over to you,” he said.
For example, while he was “minding my own business,” scrolling through his feeds, his girlfriend asked why a Shakira video appeared. “I don’t know how she got here,” he replied. “I didn’t sign up for her. I haven’t thought about Shakira since high school.”
Maybe it was because he’d eaten at a Mexican restaurant the other day, Crist reasoned. Or because he’d ordered some Colombian coffee. Finally, he told his girlfriend, “You’ve gotta stop saying Shakira around this phone. The more Shakira you say, the more Shakira they’re gonna send me!”
