“I also think it’s important to do *everything* we are told to do in worship,” he said. “Baptist worship tends to be stripped-down.”
Jeff Walton, a member of an ACNA church in Virginia and communications director and Anglican director for the Institute on Religion & Democracy, reposted Sanger’s announcement about joining the ACNA.
“Of note. Wikipedia co-founder Sanger announced in February that he had become a Christian, he’s preparing for confirmation in @The_ACNA,” said Walton. “This isn’t spiking football that he joined ‘our team,’ everyone knows how broken we are. There’s room for each of us at the foot of the cross.”
The Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) was started in 2009 by former members of the Anglican Canadian and the Episcopal Church who left over disagreements that included the ordination of women and LGBTQ+ affirmation.
The ACNA is currently conducting the trial of Bishop Stewart Ruch over claims that Ruch mishandled sexual abuse allegations against a former lay minister at Christ Our Light Anglican Church in Big Rock, Illinois. That former minister, Mark Rivera, has since been convicted of felony sexual assault and felony child sexual assault.
Ruch’s trial has been fraught since it began on July 14. Five days into the trial, the church prosecutor resigned, calling the proceedings “irreparably tainted.” After anti-abuse advocates raised concerns about the second prosecutor, that prosecutor also resigned “to remove even the appearance of impropriety.” A third prosecutor was announced Aug. 1.
“Yeah, I know this team is undergoing ‘issues,’” Sanger commented on Walton’s post, “but I figure, really, what team isn’t?”
