“I felt like the pressure of Christian celebrity was too much,” said Erwin McManus, who feels “zero need to be public.” He added, “There are a lot of good Christian writers and a lot of great pastors, but my kids only have one dad.”
Ironically, it was Aaron—now Erwin’s podcast co-host—who told his dad to “take Jesus to the world” again. “My kids told me that their generation needed me to be a voice to them,” Erwin McManus recalled. “It’s the only reason I came back.”
Erwin McManus also talked about “The Seven Frequencies of Communication,” his most recent book. In it, he explains seven communication styles—as well as the dark “shadow” counterpart of each style.
Humans often try to control and standardize people, McManus said, which minimizes their uniqueness. When we recognize one another’s preferred communication frequencies, we can understand how different people “see reality.” The pastor emphasized, “It’s better to be your [true] frequency healthy than another frequency false.”
Being on the same page lets people make connections, which is crucial, not just in church, but throughout society. “The goal isn’t simply to be heard,” McManus said, “but also…hearing.”
