In an article published by The Roys Report (TRR), McCoy told Morris he was informed of Tait’s drug use during a recording session for “Save Your Life,” a track that was on Newsboys’ 2010 album “Born Again.”
Hired to play bass on “Save Your Life,” McCoy was told during his recording of his guitar tracks that Tait was supposed to record his vocals immediately following. However, Tait was nowhere to be found.

McCoy said, “The next week, the producer let me know that Michael was on another one of his cocaine benders and had disappeared or ghosted everyone for several days.”
The studio musician provided another example of how Tait’s behavior was often excused by management and those around him. The fact that Newsboys management and other industry personnel claim they were unaware of Tait’s behavior is “a grotesque understatement,” McCoy told TRR.
McCoy explained:
I don’t know a single person who works in that industry that doesn’t know. The extent the network of enablers and fixers that have surrounded Tait for so long has gone to either actively ignore or actively hide his behavior is unreal. To now sit back and listen to them all saying, “We had no idea,” is infuriating. And unfortunately, it’s permeated throughout the CCM industry, so that there are many other artists, writers, industry execs, etc., who have absolutely zero regard for holiness.
TRR reached out to Wes Campbell, who initially told the publication that Tait’s absence during Newsboys’ recording sessions was due to his “eccentric” character.
“Now it appears we are getting a much fuller understanding as to why he may have been unable or unwilling to show up for those sessions,” Campbell recently told TRR. “There were no real consequences given to him for missing sessions as his excuses seemed to be those of an artist with anxieties or even fear.”
“It was certainly never seen as an issue of substance abuse as no one had a clue to even suspect such activities,” Campbell added. Campbell said that upon learning Tait was living a double life, he agreed that Tait “needed to leave the band and seek professional help. He then entered treatment.”
