Over the weekend, David Crowder returned to performing live shows for the first time since breaking his leg earlier this month. He also shared with fans about how he was injured.

On Saturday (Sept. 6), Crowder played the final day of the 40 Days of Christian Music at The Ark Encounter. In comical fashion unique to Crowder, he entered the stage riding a mobility scooter modified with a microphone.

“I’m not near as athletic as I thought I was,” Crowder told his social media followers in a post on Aug. 6. “I’ve broken my leg and had to have emergency surgery including some plates and screws.” Crowder informed fans that he would have to miss some shows but that he was working toward getting back on the road.

Crowder’s injury left many wondering how he broke his leg. During Saturday’s concert he told the story of how it happened.

“You know the elite athlete I am this is gonna come as a surprise,” Crowder joked. “We were out grilling—we’re grilling some meats, and we were out at the lake, and topography there is quite deep.”

Crowder explained that he was grilling on the balcony of a lake house. He continued, “There’s a little smoke stack on top of this thing that regulates the air flow to get that sweet meat chemistry going, and you use what’s called the regulator at the top of the vent.” What happened, Crowder shared, “was we opened the thing and the regulator fell off over the balcony [and] down to the cliff.”

“I’m looking down there [and] I’m like I can totally get that,” Crowder said.

He then told the crowd, “I couldn’t get that, but I got to see what my foot looks like on the side of my leg. And I didn’t like it.”

“I was like, ‘We gotta put that back,’” Crowder joked. After doctors set his leg, Crowder asked them what his chances were of playing the show at The Ark Encounter, which was a month away.
