Many young women struggle with a sense of loneliness. They want real friendships and earnestly, tirelessly seek belonging. Their desire for the truth is as sharp and urgent as their desire for the comfort and joy of loving, godly relationships.
The church has the power to offer them the relationships that will change and ground their lives forever.
But drawing young women to church—and preventing more of them from becoming disconnected with it—requires most of all that we present them a compelling vision of Jesus, and of his Word.
A compelling vision of Jesus entails a community where each young woman can perceive her own worth, her function and her talents at use for God’s Kingdom. Young women need to arrive at church and know where they fit.
In a culture of mixed, confusing messages from social media, we must cling to the simple and durable truth of the Bible. Christian friendship, professional opportunity and vocational cultivation are important parts of any sustainable work intended to draw young women back to the Church.
But God’s Word is essential, not marginal, to our efforts to attract young people to the Church. God’s Word is what changes our lives. God’s Word is what will draw all people including young women—closer to him.
Cultivate and attend to the young women in your own congregations. Start small, but start now. If we’re faithful and we sow the seeds today, God will ensure there is a harvest of love, community and faithful service tomorrow.
