On Sunday, April 27, while preaching at ChurchLV in Las Vegas, New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr shared the heartbreaking news that his wife recently suffered a miscarriage.
Carr has been an outspoken Christian throughout his 11-year pro-football career and lives by the motto: faith first, family second, and football last.
Going into his third year as a member of New Orleans Saints, Carr gave an update on some hardships his family has been recently experiencing. He also used his sermon time to dispel what he described as lies—reports regarding an injury he is currently dealing with.

“Yes, I have a shoulder injury, ” Carr said, “despite what ESPN says and what some lady on the podcast might think, I have an MRI report to prove it. The team knows about it. We’ve been in constant communication. There’s nothing wrong. We’re figuring it out, and we’re going to go forward with that.”
“I’ve been dealing with this, and I’ve been dealing with people lying about me,” Carr continued. “And I’m like, Lord, why do I have to continue to deal with this nonsense?”
The four-time Pro-Bowl quarterback then said, “I say that to preface with, you never know what someone’s really going through.” Carr asked, “So why do we continually try to attack people—and I would say attack—people that are trying to do things maybe the right way. Why do we always have to have an opinion?
“Twitter and Instagram has ruined things for some people, because now all these people think that they have voices that have to be heard,” said Carr. “It’s like some people’s voices don’t need to be heard right now…because not one of our opinions in here matters. The only opinion that matters is the Word of God.”

Carr, who has been married to his wife, Heather, for almost 13 years and has four children, shared that his family experienced some major trials, including sickness while on vacation, his shoulder injury, and burns his wife received after their fire pit exploded on her while she was lighting it.
“We’re outside and we’re playing, and my wife goes over to light our new little fire thing so the kids can sit around it, and it explodes,” Carr said. “Right in her face, propane fire, boom. She’s on fire.”
