During a call with “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday (Aug. 19), President Donald Trump expressed his belief that his work to end the Russia-Ukraine war will grant him entry into heaven.
The call came following a meeting Trump had with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday. The meeting resulted in the beginning arrangements for a meeting between Zelenskyy and President Vladimir Putin with the hopes of resolving Russia’s multi-year war against Ukraine. Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, resulting in tens of thousands of civilian deaths.
Prior to his meeting with Zelenskyy, Trump met with Putin on Aug. 15.
Earlier this January, Trump caused confusion by placing the blame on Zelenskyy for starting the war with Russia. “You should have never started it. You could have made a deal,” Trump said in reference to Zelenskyy.
On Friday, Feb. 28, the last time Trump met with Zelenskyy in the White House’s Oval Office, the two presidents engaged in a shouting match after Vance accused Zelenskyy of not being grateful to the Trump administration for the aid the United States has provided to Ukraine.
“I just want to end it,” Trump told the Fox hosts. “I want to end it. You know, we’re not losing American lives. We’re not losing American soldiers. We’re losing Russian and Ukrainian—mostly soldiers, some people, as missiles hit wrong spots or get lobbed into cities like Kiev in town.”
Trump continued, “But if I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed, I want to try and get to heaven, if possible.”
“I’m hearing I’m not doing well. I hear I am really at the bottom of the totem pole,” the president added. “And if I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons.”
Trump explained that he doesn’t plan to attend the first meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin because the two of them need to develop some sort of relationship.
