Need some personal growth tips, especially as another new year begins? Unless ministry leaders are growing personally and spiritually, they won’t be leading effectively or for long. So check out this advice from a longtime children’s ministry leader.
Are you growing yourself personally? Are you doing the things necessary to transform yourself into a strong and healthy leader? Those type of questions are crucial for church workers and volunteers.
I believe that if you’re not growing personally, you’re not growing your ministry. In other words, you cannot pass on to others what you do not possess yourself.
So what’s your plan for personal growth in the new year? Reading? Mentoring? Conferences? Blogs? Networking? The possibilities are almost endless. Frankly, they can even be overwhelming. Not knowing how to proceed or how to access resources can feel paralyzing.
The Key to Personal Growth
So here’s what I’ve found to be key: Just do something! Just start the process of personal growth in some small way. For example:
- Have a conversation with a veteran kidmin leader. You’ll be surprised how far a free cup of coffee can go with us!
- Commit to reading three blog posts every day. Set up alerts for new posts related to church leaders. For a list of good children’s ministry blogs, click here.
- Join a local children’s ministry network. To find one in your community, you might have to ask around.
- Read just one Bible chapter a day. Everyone has time to do that, and you’ll get through 25 books this year by doing so!
Yes, many other methods of personal growth and spiritual growth are available. But the point, again, is this: Just do something. Every day. You can’t develop leadership in a day. You develop it daily.
