“Instead,” he said, “it often becomes about mocking and humiliating each other like school children, both sides returning the same hostile spirit back and [forth].”

On Sunday, Sept. 21, Charlie Kirk’s memorial service took place in Glendale, Arizona. Tens of thousands attended the service for the cofounder and former executive director of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), who was murdered by a gunman on Sept. 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University.

Speakers included President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, and Kirk’s wife, Erika, who made headlines for stating that she forgave her husband’s assassin.

“On the cross, our Savior said, ‘Father, forgive them for they [know not] what they do’…that man—that young man—I forgive him,” said Erika Kirk, crying in the clip Welch posted and receiving a standing ovation.

As she dabbed away tears, she said, “I forgive him because it was what Christ did and is what Charlie would do.”

“The answer to hate is not hate,” said Erika Kirk. “The answer we know from the gospel is love and always love. Love for our enemies and love for those who persecute us.”

“This moved me deeply yesterday, seeing how Erika has chosen to live out what I’ve been hoping political Christians would display for years,” Welch said in his post. “Loving our fellow man in America—all men and all women, even our enemies! Maybe she is a sign that this really is a turning point for America? Should I get my hopes up? Or am I thinking like a fool?”

“What I do know is this: I’ve seen glimpses of the future, and the glue that holds everything together in the next life is a love so profound that the human mind can’t even begin to comprehend it,” Welch concluded. “We’re only here for a short time, and Christ is calling humanity to step into that future now. To display true, eternal love and forgiveness toward one another. ❤️.”

Responses to Welch ranged from people criticizing him for posting about Charlie Kirk positively and people thanking him and agreeing with his words.
