The new biblical comedy “The Promised Land” is scheduled to debut its first season on YouTube on Oct. 1.

The tagline for the series, which is a “The Office” meets “The Chosen” type of comedy, reads, “Crossing the Red Sea was the easy part.” The show synopsis says:

Moses and the Hebrews are fresh out of Egypt and adjusting to their new freedom—with all the chaos of a fledgling start-up. With Red Sea miracles behind them and 40 years of wandering ahead, the people grapple with doubt, bickering, and bizarre wilderness problems—from complaints about manna to doing laundry in the river. Alongside Miriam, Aaron, and Joshua, Moses tries to keep the group moving forward while questioning his own ability to lead. “The Promised Land” Season One blends comedy with poignancy, revealing that life in the wilderness feels a lot like working in an office: full of impossible challenges, messy coworkers, and moments of unexpected grace.

Actor Wasim No’Mani (“The Chosen,” “Seal Team,” “Yellowstone”) spoke with ChurchLeaders about his lead role in the mockumentary that humorously explores the biblical story of Moses.

No’Mani explained that the show focuses on the humanity and comedy within the characters’ situations, rather than mocking them. He highlighted the self-doubt of his character, Moses, and the challenge of portraying such an iconic figure. “The Promised Land” aims to engage audiences by balancing humor with reverence for the characters.

“We’re not mocking the characters but the situation,” No’Mani said. “Writer, creator, and director Mitch Hudson tells the Moses story and finds the humanity or the comedy within the humanity and the in-between.”

No’Mani admitted he understands why people might be apprehensive to watch a “comedy” about Moses, but he reassured viewers that Hudson’s intention for “The Promised Land” is to tell the “Moses story and [to find] the comedy in the humanity, as opposed to making a comedy about Moses.”

“Initially, I really felt what Moses felt like,” No’Mani said about when he was asked to play the role of Moses. “Are you sure you want me to be the guy?” he thought. “Because it is not a light responsibility.”
