Days after going viral for correcting one of his congregants as she offered her tithe, Bishop Marvin Winans celebrated a “record Sunday” of giving and announced that his church had received a sizeable donation from actor and producer Tyler Perry. Winans alluded to the controversy the incident with congregant Roberta McCoy generated, and he attributed the criticism to the work of the devil.
“I’m going to start this out by saying last Sunday was a record Sunday,” said Winans, founder and senior pastor of Perfecting Church in Detroit, on Sunday, Oct. 26. The pastor said that during the previous week’s Giving Sunday, the church had raised $525,768 for their building fund.
“I have some news that I’m going to give toward the end of this service that when the devil went crazy, folks started calling up from other states saying, ‘I got to give on this,’” said Winans. “Well, maybe…I’ll tell you now since y’all happy enough.”
“Since it broke out Monday,” Winans said, “one person called and he said, ‘Tell my name.’ He said, ‘Cause I know God is in this.’ Tyler Perry sent $100,000.”
“Why don’t you give God praise,” said the pastor, “because what the devil meant for evil, God turn it around.” Winans said that “since last Sunday, it’s gone up to about $650,000. So when the devil starts to promote you, know that God got something better.”
“I don’t even like to give the devil credit,” he said. “Cause we know we serve a on time God. This church has never been about money. That’s right. It’s been about the presence of God.”

Marvin Winans: ‘We Are in a Spiritual Warfare’
This past week Bishop Marvin Winans went viral for an interaction he had with Roberta McCoy as she presented her tithe to him on Giving Sunday. The pastor had encouraged church members to give $1,000 “plus one,” that is, a total of $2,000, although many gave different amounts, some larger and some smaller.
Those who were giving their money formed a line in the aisle during each church service and approached Winans one at a time as he stood behind the pulpit. The pastor had each congregant to read a statement saying they were “giving in faith and standing in unity with the vision of Perfecting Church,” that they were “sowing this seed of” whatever their tithe amount was, and they would “receive the blessing to come to all that participated.”
During the first service that Sunday, Winans asked several times for people who were giving less than $2,000 to wait to give until later. When McCoy approached, she told Winans that she had $1,000 plus $235. The pastor appeared frustrated that she only had $1,200 and said that people weren’t listening.
