QB Brock Purdy Keeps His Eyes on Jesus
As ChurchLeaders has reported, quarterback Brock Purdy speaks often about his Christian faith. The married father of one entered the NFL as “Mr. Irrelevant”—the final pick in the 2022 draft. But he quickly proclaimed that his “identity is in Jesus.”

In January 2024, after leading the 49ers to a comeback in the NFC Championship Game, Purdy glorified God, saying his heavenly Father provides peace, joy, and steadfastness. About his quick ascension through the NFL ranks, the QB said, “It’s just a testament to God and where he’s taken me in life.”
During interviews, Purdy also shares Bible passages and emphasizes the importance of the Holy Spirit and prayer. In early 2024 he told Sports Spectrum, “The minute you have fame, and if you’re trying to chase status and money and all this stuff, you’ll lose your life—rather than denying yourself, picking up your cross, keeping your eyes on Jesus and his promises.”
Monday night, Purdy led San Francisco to a 20-9 victory against the Carolina Panthers. Afterward, Purdy’s teammate and fellow believer Christian McCaffrey praised God during an on-field interview. The running back, formerly with Carolina, told ESPN’s Lisa Salters, “All glory to God, man. I mean, every time I’m able to step on this field, I look at it as a major blessing and [am] just thankful to [God] for allowing me to come out here and keep playing.”
