Country Star Morgan Wallen Is a Preacher’s Kid
Country artist Morgan Wallen, 32, has a reputation for being rebellious and for sparking controversy. Previously, he’s had to apologize for using a racial slur and for violating pandemic protocols before a scheduled “Saturday Night Live” appearance.
Some of that rebellion might date back to his childhood, according to Wallen. The Tennessee native’s father was a Southern Baptist pastor, and his mother was a teacher.
In 2021, Wallen told Billboard that as a preacher’s kid, he felt like he “was supposed to just be the leading example of Christianity.” And from childhood, “I was going to do the opposite,” he added. “I can’t help it. It’s just who I am. Like I’ve got something to prove on my own.”
While discussing “I Ain’t Coming Back,” his recent hit duet with Post Malone, Wallen said, “I love what [this song] says. There’s a lot of cool imagery. And, you know, me as a Christian, I think anytime I can throw little hints of that in my music, I’m all for it. It’s good.”
In the chorus, Wallen sings, “Now I’m walkin’ on this water mixed with Johnnie Walker Black. There’s a lot of reasons I ain’t Jesus, but the main one is that I ain’t comin’ back.”
