On Friday, Christianity Today published a tribute to theologian Dr. John Piper in honor of his 80th birthday, which is on Sunday (Jan. 11).

Piper was the longtime pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis and is the author of numerous books, including “Desiring God.” Piper continues to lead a teaching ministry with the same name.

Piper is also the chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary and a founding member of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW), an organization aimed at promoting a complementarian view of gender issues.

On the same day that Christianity Today’s tribute was published, author and Bible teacher Beth Moore took to social media to share “a story” about an encounter she had with Piper some years ago.

Moore is likewise the author of numerous books and the founder of Living Proof Ministries. For decades, she was a part of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), a denomination that holds to complementarian theology. Through the years, Moore’s teaching ministry has come under criticism from some evangelicals with a more conservative vision of complementarianism, despite the measures Moore had often taken to adhere to complementarian convictions.

Moore parted ways with the SBC in 2021.

While Piper has not been a public critic of Moore’s ministry, his views of gender roles are among the more conservative.

On Friday, Moore shared that pastor and Passion Conference founder Louie Giglio once invited both her and Piper to lunch. During that lunch, Moore recounted, Giglio “went suspiciously quiet.”

“And there we were, sitting across from one another forced to talk or take the chance of dishonoring our host. I’m not saying this was Louie’s intention,” said Moore. “But I suspect it was Christ’s since he’s the Head of every table where Christians sit even if he’s unacknowledged.”

“There we were, two people who loved Jesus, prized his fellowship above all earthly treasures, pored over the scriptures and prayed day in and day out,” she continued. “Passionate about Jesus then and to this day. If either of us are faking it then you’ve got to at least give us credit for keeping it up for so long.”
