As Sunday’s Super Bowl matchup nears, the two starting quarterbacks are using their platforms to honor Jesus and discuss their faith. Speaking to the media this week in Santa Clara, California, Seattle Seahawks QB Sam Darnold and New England Patriots QB Drake Maye answered questions about their beliefs and how they live them out.

On Feb. 8, Darnold and Maye will take the field at Levi’s Stadium for Super Bowl LX.

Recently, ChurchLeaders wrote about the strong faith foundations of this season’s playoff quarterbacks. Watch for more coverage about Christian players and coaches who will be competing for the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday.

Seahawks QB Sam Darnold: ‘Share What You Believe In’

Journeyman quarterback Sam Darnold, 28, led the Seahawks to a 14-3 regular-season record. This week, many reporters are focusing on the “redemption” story of Darnold, who went from being labeled a bust to starting in the sport’s biggest game. That journey, according to Darnold, is what has made his success so special.

The USC product credits his supportive family and Christian faith for helping him persevere. Darnold, though soft-spoken, said it’s “important for anyone to be able to share what you believe in and understand exactly who you are as a person.”

When asked how his faith affects his leadership, Darnold said he needs to understand teammates’ backgrounds and how “we’re all brought together through this game.” The QB, who got engaged last summer, said he and his fiancée have “been through a lot together” lately, and now he’s “trying to create a better version of myself.”

Darnold also tries to stay on the straight and narrow, setting an example for teammates and fans. One of his grandfathers still works to keep young people away from substances. (Fun fact: His other grandfather was a Marlboro Man actor.)
