Cameron explained how his episode on hell came to be. “So when my son on my show, ‘The Kirk Cameron Show,’ said, ‘Hey, Dad, what’s the deal with hell? I mean, I know it’s bad. We don’t want people to go there, but there’s this controversy,'” Cameron said. “‘Is it annihilation? You disappear—you get snuffed out, or are you actually kept alive forever by God and tormented eternally?’”

“[James] brought up the real concern that many non-believers have, [which is], how can I love a God like that? Who would do something like that to somebody?” he added. “Now, that’s not to say that God is unjust or merciless, but to my neighbors, it might appear so if they don’t understand the holiness of God and the seriousness of sin.”

“Or maybe Martin Luther was right,” he said. “Maybe some of the early church fathers were right that the punishment for sin is death, not eternal life in hell where you’re punished forever.”

“That’s a legit debate. That’s not heresy. That’s history,” Cameron argued.

The “Left Behind” actor said that “Hellgate” really “humbled” him, and he hopes it does the same for viewers.

“It humbled me, and I hope that it humbles you when you watch it, and I hope it helps you understand why you believe what you believe,” Cameron said. “It might even change your mind about hell, and it might answer some of the most difficult aspects of the Scriptures for you.”
