Politicians Discuss Ten Commandments, Church-State Separation
Next, politicians James Talarico and Lauren Boebert talked about displaying the Ten Commandments in public schools. Boebert, who recalled having to learn about Greek mythology, said students in her state of Colorado face all types of sexualization. “I would much rather my children see the Ten Commandments, that basically just gives a moral standard, rather than [hear], ‘You can pleasure yourself, and here’s how,’” said Boebert.
Talarico disagreed, saying he opposes “indoctrination of any form, whether it comes from the left or the right, in our schools.” To applause, he said politicians in Texas have been trying to “force everybody to put up a poster of the Ten Commandments [in classrooms] when they don’t even follow the Ten Commandments themselves.”
“As people of faith, we should be trying to follow those Ten Commandments rather than trying to force people to put up a poster, because to me, that indicates a dead religion,” Talarico said. “If you have to force people to put up a poster to prove your legitimacy, that means we don’t have a living faith anymore.”
The separation of church and state protects both entities, according to Talarico. “When the church gets too cozy with political power, it loses its prophetic voice, its ability to speak truth to power,” he said. Christians, “including many Protestant Christians, fought for that separation, because they believed it benefited them,” Talarico said. “We’ve gotta get back to that in this country.”

Speaking to Bill Maher, Texas State Rep. James Talarico and U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert talked about the dangers of cancel culture and the importance of standing up to dangerous ideas within their own parties.

Maher defended the free speech of activists such as Charlie Kirk, although the host said he has “no use for a person like that.” Boebert mentioned the “cancel culture of COVID lockdowns,” including shuttering churches.
Talarico, who has many conservative family members, said the right has always warned about the government canceling free speech and “usurping” the church’s role. “You warned us about secret pedophile rings,” he added. “All that is now happening, and your [Republican] party is enabling it.” Talarico thanked Boebert for standing up to some of those issues, saying more people in both parties must be willing to do that.
