Hegseth’s monthly worship services at the Pentagon have been noteworthy for both the praise and criticism they have received. They began last year and have featured various pastors as speakers, including Douglas Wilson, a self-described Christian nationalist and paleo-Confederate. Wilson is the co-founder of the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches (CREC), the denomination of which Hegseth is a member.
While worship gatherings at the Pentagon are not unprecedented, what raised concerns among some was the fact that Hegseth’s worship services are official Pentagon events hosted and promoted by the defense secretary and broadcast to the entire department.
Speaking in defense of the worship gatherings, Hegseth has said, “It’s called: ‘In God We Trust.’”

“Since our founding, America’s leaders—and warriors—have sought God’s providence and protection. We seek to glorify Him as we serve our country,” said Hegseth. “At the Pentagon, we will humbly continue this sacred tradition—each and every month.”
