Johnny Hunt Sues SBC and Guidepost, Demanding Trial by Jury, Calls Assault Accusation ‘Recklessly False’

The former SBC president is asking “the Court to enter judgment in his favor and against [the SBC, the SBC EC, and Guidepost Solutions]; award general and special damages in amounts to be proven at trial; award punitive damages; award interest to Plaintiff; tax costs against Defendants; and award all other just and appropriate relief.”

SBC EC Issues Statement

In a statement issued to ChurchLeaders by a spokesperson for the SBC EC, the EC said, “The SBC Executive Committee is aware of the complaint against the Convention filed by former SBC president Johnny Hunt. We are reviewing the complaint and will not be commenting on active litigation at this time.”

New Season Church and Hiland Park Baptist Church in Panama City, Florida, are both under review for removal from friendly cooperation with the SBC for hosting and allowing Hunt to preach at their churches after credible allegations of abuse against Hunt came to light.

The review was initiated after then-SBC Abuse Reform Implementation Task Force (ARITF) member Todd Benkert reported the two churches to the SBC Credentials Committee.

Hunt did not reply to ChurchLeaders’ request for comment.
