While explaining why he believes now is the time for a film like “Nefarious,” Solomon told ChurchLeaders, “I believe every single human being on the planet right now, if they step out of their house, you can feel that something is different—something has changed—and that there is a darkness now and something is wrong.”
“I believe the devil’s time is short, so he’s frantic to get as many souls as he can. The Lord pushed hard on this. ‘I want this out. I want this out,’” Solomon said. Describing the current cultural moment, Solomon added, “It’s like Moloch and Beelzebub and all these ancient demonic gods—the devil is rampant. And I think that this is a clarion call to the world.”
The directors shared they had received hate mail and hateful phone calls in response to “Nefarious,” and they expressed their belief that the film is exposing the devil by drawing him out of the darkness and exposing him to the light.
“If people don’t believe in the devil, declare war against him and see what happens,” Solomon said. The filmmakers shared with ChurchLeaders that they believe they came under demonic attack while making the film.
For instance, during production, a rainstorm ripped the roof off of their studio, turning their editing room into a water park and destroying their computers. Multiple accidents also occurred on set.
One day before the film’s release, Steve Deace, who wrote the book on which the film was based, was rushed to the hospital due to a cyst under his arm, which doctors discovered to be MRSA in his bloodstream.
During one stop on the press tour, the filmmakers said that an exorcist was called into the room because the lights were flickering, which was preventing them from shooting. They said that the sound mixer then died, and the discs in each of the cameras were subsequently corrupted.
The directors heard a woman, who was not in the room, start demonically chanting when the exorcist began blessing the room. They said the voice then suddenly fled, the lights stopped flickering, and the equipment began working again.
“There is a devil! And he is [working] 24/7/365,” Solomon said.”Him and his demons are on the job to do one thing, and that’s to steal your soul. And you need to get closer—closer to Jesus—because there are things we do in our life [that] we don’t even realize that they’re evil.”
The directors purposely listed “Nefarious” as a horror-thriller film in the hope of attracting the those who enjoy movies like “The Pope’s Exorcist” and “Evil Dead Rise.” Solomon said, “We designed the movie’s poster specifically for the nonbelievers, for the horror audience that’s being demonically infested, that they would come [and see the movie].”
