Other people said they’re now boycotting the Blue Jays. “Get woke go broke,” one person commented. Another posted a photo of Toronto baseball caps being burned, noting: “I can no longer stand all this virtue [signaling], sports used to be an escape but now it’s just another trap!”

Denny Burk, a biblical studies professor who serves as president of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, said the treatment of Bass shows how intolerant American society has become. Burk tweeted, “2010: ‘How does my gay marriage hurt you?’ 2023: ‘Since this pro baseball player won’t deny his conscience and celebrate LGBTQ, we are cutting him from the team.’”

In an opinion piece about Bass, sportswriter Clay Travis cited double standards and asked where the outrage is. “How have all the sports media who fell all over themselves to defend [49ers QB Colin] Kaepernick’s right to speak out on political issues in uniform at work not even uttered a single syllable to defend Bass’ ability to share his own political opinions outside of work?” Travis wrote.

“I thought the sports media believed it was incredibly important for athletes to use their platforms to advocate for things they believed in,” he added. “It’s amazing how all the free speech defenders vanish the moment someone says something they disagree with.”
