Nearly 70,000 people have liked Lecrae’s post and several others have commented with their reactions to his opinion.

“Dead on, man. It’s a fine line between being a good steward of the ministry God gives you, and growing a church like a business,” one commenter said “Always keep the main thing, the main thing.”

Another shared, “Yes yes yes! I could go in on this all day! It’s like going to AA meetings but never doing your steps, you may stay sober but you’ll not experience any growth in your recovery if you’re not doing the spiritual work and just treating it like a social program.”

“Also, I gotta say this…as someone with a background in marketing, public speaking AND who went to Bible college…a lot of these mega church pastors are charismatic and dynamic speakers but that does not mean they’re also phenomenal theologians,” she continued. “People going to church and getting motivational speeches…and not truly growing.”

This Isn’t the First Time Lecrae Has Spoken Up About the Church and Current Culture

Lecrae has openly shared his own journey of deconstruction. The artist still loves the church, but it’s not without its problems. He lived in the tension of being a Christian, involved with incredible leaders—while he was “hated” for his outspoken advocacy for racial reconciliation.

In fact, during this process, the hip hop artist wrote a song, “Deconstruction” that captures the honest vulnerability of the process. The lyrics include, “I deconstructed long before people knew what to call it // I know that’s scary to some folks, so hold on, let me pause it … Tears streaming as I weep, felt I heard the Lord speak // I’ve been running from you, but you never ran away from me.”

When asked if he is “woke,” Lecrae admits he hates the term. “To be honest with you,” said Lecrae. “In 2023, I hate that word, one, because it’s been co-opted like so many other things for political agendas and ideologies. A lot of times people think I’m very political. The truth of the matter is, I am not. I’m not married to a political party, I’m married to the Scriptures.”
