The full interview with Jordan Peterson includes other topics such as Pence’s run for the presidency, education, and the war between Russia and Ukraine. The portion on gender transitions begins around the 13:00 mark.
When asked why he took such a strong stand on the issue for children, Pence said, “I’m standing here not just as a former vice president and governor. I’m a dad. I’m a grandfather. This is really about protecting our kids from making decisions early in their lives, but when they’re not equipped to make them.”
Mike Pence Is Running for the 2024 Republican Presidential Nomination
Pence’s support of former president Donald Trump has wavered over the years. Now, Pence is running against his former boss for the Republican nomination. According to TIME Magazine, the last time a vice president ran against a president with whom he served was 83 years ago when John Nance Garner challenged Franklin Delano Roosevelt. However, in that case, both were still in office.
Following their time in office together, Pence and Trump parted ways. “The public split between the two men happened near the end of Trump’s term, amid his efforts to overturn Joe Biden’s election victory,” TIME reported. Pence rejected Trump’s request to not certify the 2020 election results, as was Pence’s constitutional duty as vice president. The events and allegations surrounding the storming of the capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, have further strained their relationship.
As a self-proclaimed evangelical Christian and Republican, Pence was the first vice president to attend March for Life in 2017, supporting the sanctity of life and education. Pence continues to advocate against abortion, citing his religious views. Pence’s campaign will focus on expanding free markets, fiscal responsibilities, global alliances, and small government.
“We stand firm with compassion and principle,” Pence said.
