Polling by fivethirtyeight.com reveals that almost 42% of Americans have an “unfavorable” view of Kennedy. Kennedy, who didn’t qualify for the June 27 presidential debate, described that event as a “sad story for democracy.”

According to reports, Kennedy’s family has tried to dissuade his candidacy. Vanity Fair’s Hagan spoke to family members and friends about Kennedy’s “problematic personality,” including untruthfulness, a savior complex, and what one person labeled a “pathological need for attention.”

Kennedy, who is on his third marriage, has six children. Raised Catholic, he has admitted to struggling with his faith after his father was assassinated and while he struggled with addiction as a young adult. In April, Kennedy told the National Catholic Register he experienced “a profound spiritual realignment” in early adulthood that has been “the centerpiece of my life ever since.”
