Matthew and Marlee Benson—creators and executive producers of “Redemption“—share how their new docuseries came to life. Despite having no filmmaking background, their love for documentaries and witnessing Ohio State football player Gee Scott Jr.’s testimony at their church in Gahanna, Ohio sparked the vision.

Produced by Kingdom Films and Serif Creative and backed by Jon Erwin’s Wonder Project and the Tim Tebow Foundation, “Redemption” chronicles the Ohio State football team’s unforgettable 2024 season that ended in a national championship.

The docuseries captures the extraordinary faith journeys of players like Gee Scott Jr., TreVeyon Henderson, Emeka Egbuka, and Will Howard in a way that has never been told before. It also includes commentary from Tim Tebow, Urban Meyer, and team defensive coordinator, Tim Walton.

“We are not filmmakers, but something we do love and we can agree on is documentaries,” Marlee told ChurchLeaders. “We both are avid documentary watchers.”

“And so, summer of 2024, right before the season kicked off, we were kind of binging documentaries like ‘The Last Dance’ and ‘Swamp Kings’ and ‘Quarterback,’” she said. “We couldn’t get enough of them. And then we went to our normal Sunday church service and Gee Scott Jr., who you might know played for Ohio State Buckeyes last year, he actually gave his testimony at our church.”

Marlee continued, “So as we’re listening to him give his testimony and the highs and lows of his life, finding his identity in football, and then ultimately finding it in Christ—that Sunday, he actually baptized a lot of the players on the team.” The Bensons attend One Church, just 10 miles from campus. Marlee described the service as “pretty powerful” and one that continued to resonate with the couple when they returned home.
