The elation after Saturday’s playoff victory didn’t last long for Broncos players and fans. Shortly after Denver defeated the Buffalo Bills 33-30 in overtime in the AFC divisional round, head coach Sean Payton announced that starting quarterback Bo Nix was out for the season with a broken ankle.

Nix, an outspoken Christian, led the Broncos to a 14-3 regular-season record and the team’s first AFC West title in a decade. The second-year pro, who was injured on one of the final plays in overtime, is undergoing surgery today (Jan. 20) in Alabama.

Now, instead of preparing for his first AFC Championship Game, Nix will be recovering and cheering on his teammates from the sidelines.

Joy and Heartbreak for Broncos QB Bo Nix

While announcing the shocking news about his starting quarterback, Coach Sean Payton noted that Bo Nix is a “strong, faith-based guy.” The coach said when he went to talk to Nix after the x-ray results were in, the QB was with his family. “He knows that God has a plan for him,” Payton told reporters.

Yesterday, wife Izzy Nix shared an image from a hallway in Empower Field at Mile High Stadium. On her Instagram story, she wrote, “I snuck this picture [Saturday] because I wanted to remember this moment forever. The joy, followed by the heartbreak, followed by watching each teammate and coach come to this little corner and sit by Bo’s side.”

Izzy Nix continued: “God could have placed us anywhere, and I’m so grateful He chose Denver. He is the perfect Author of Bo’s story and we cannot wait to see what He has in store for this team—We’ll be on the front row, cheering the loudest!!!”

The QB’s wife concluded her post with the words of 2 Corinthians 4:16-17. “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison” (ESV).
