Is the Bible banned in North Korea?

In 2026, the answer is effectively yes.

While the regime does not publish a public “Bible ban” law, owning a Bible in North Korea is treated as an act of political treason. Christians who are discovered can face execution, imprisonment in labor camps, or lifelong surveillance. Entire families can be punished for one person’s faith.

The reality of a Bible banned North Korea is not theoretical. It is lived out in stories like Sang-chul’s.

When Owning a Bible Is a Crime

According to documentation from Open Doors, North Korea consistently ranks as the most dangerous country in the world for Christians. Possessing Scripture is considered evidence of allegiance to a foreign ideology.

Believers report that:

  • Home inspections are routine.

  • Phones are searched at checkpoints.

  • Informants are embedded in neighborhoods.

  • Even a Bible app can trigger arrest.

If Christians are discovered, they may be sent to political prison camps. Family members often share the sentence.

Sang-chul had grown up believing missionaries were terrorists. In his homeland, he had been taught that speaking the name of God was treason.
